Y’all…the love for Naptown Slim is so real out here. A brutha really touched right now, man. I could cry thug tears of joy.
My man on Twitter, his name is @DigitalPharaoh, made this for Slim and sent it to me today.
I mean, does that NOT look RIGHT? People can FEEL me, bruh. I’m out here saying real funky REAL thangs. I treasure these kinds of gifts from the people I have met or touched with my words, even in a digital forum.
Love is real, man. It never dies…and when you got it in you, you give it and you show it. I shouldn’t say it never dies, cuz that is sho nuff a way to kill it, keeping it inside of you and not showing it…word…cold blooded, man.
Love can’t live alone, man. I put the word into the streets because it’s real.
Thanks to my man, Stephen. It just got realer. Naptown Slim got a logo.
Another funky, cold blooded Naptown Slim production. Always real.

I dig Tumblr. I like the way you can give your posts more flavor with links and such. I really enjoy blogging on this site.

There’s a lotta folks who use Tumblr a lotta different ways, just like Twitter. Lotsa folks use it LIKE Twitter, which at first I admittedly didn’t understand, but once I had Tumblr on my SMARTPHONE, it made that style of posting make perfect sense. It’s like Twitter with cooler pics and more commentary on the eyePhone, man.

Anyway, that leads to the inspiration for this post. I’ve been wanting to do this for a while…and I do it from time-to-time when I post #BARS here, but I put this one together specifically with ‘Tumblr’ in mind.

Here it is, just some a quick minute of Monster Factory shit with the lyrics posted and links for all the goofy stuff I reference. I’m a big fan of sneaking punchlines into #BARS, not in a “leaving the word ‘like’ outta similes” way, but in a way where wordplay will lead you back to the reference. Sometimes, I’ll use the background vocal to lead the listener back to the reference, #aswell. Lotsa cats do it, it ain’t like I’m doing anything brand-new, but I’ve been findings ways to avoid the word ‘like’ in rhymes for a while.

#ATFU #TheTinkerer #SpeakMonsterSpeakLive

Had a great time tonight and by some sort of grace, I was able to perform this song kinda close to how it sounds on the recording.

I been trying to figure out how to get the monster onstage with me. I was lucky enough to have my homeboy, TXTBOOK (DYOG), bring his gear and DJ, so my mixer was sitting off to the side looking all lonely, feeling ignored. Poor lil mixer…

I hollered at Doug the sound man, who happens to be awesome, was in the first group I was ever in with me, and is a KILLER sound engineer, about a ‘Monster Mic’. He didn’t have the effects unit he needed to pull it off. Being the #punkrockthisshit guy that I am, I came up with the idea of running a microphone thru my mixer. I would use the effects unit on my mixer to get the monster rocking. We sound checked it and got it right. I think it came off pretty cool and this is only the second time I’ve played this song, so I wanted to get it on tape.

I’m the toolbag holding the camera/iPhone and that other voice off-frame is my main man, Mr. Kinetik, who rocked as my DJ for the night. That’s love. That’s multitasking. That’s holding it down for your gee. My brutha…I love that cat, man. That’s how #ATFU does it, man.

Big shouts to @SleeperCellCrew, @GreyGranite, & @Eratic for rocking with me tonight and their support in general. Thanks to everyone that was at the release party tonight. I had a GREAT time. I hope you like the album. ‘The Tinkerer’ is available on iTunes this Tuesday, January 31. You can order the CD now at DADDYREAL.COM…and yeah, I’m geeked.

Maaaaaaaan…

I’m sittin’ here geeked off this performance.

This right here is a prime example of why I support the #ATFU family.

Originality. Creativity. Style. Bars. Beats. Punk Rock Shit.

You pulled off the 2 mic/effect brilliantly.

Y’all better get your copy of The Tinkerer. You won’t be disappointed.

On iTunes this Tuesday, January 31 or order the CD now at DADDYREAL.COM

Cheers, Rusty.

BIO: MEET ‘THE TINKERER’

Rusty Redenbacher returns with his first self-produced album, ‘The Tinkerer’. Consisting of 18 tracks, all written, produced and recorded by Redenbacher himself, ’The Tinkerer’ is a layered album; some people may hear a ‘concept album’, but if you were to ask Redenbacher, he’d tell you, “The concept is…well…it just is.”

Known for his work in pioneering Naptown indie hip-hop act, Mudkids, Redenbacher has spent the last year releasing solo projects and establishing a new collective, #ATFU (The Tornado Alley) with six other artists. Rusty released his first solo album, ‘Lazarus’, produced by SPStar in December of 2010. What followed with a barrage of free music via his many web platforms. 2011 saw the release of underground favorite, ’The Professor And The Hustler’ with #ATFU’s Mr. Kinetik and‘5ive On The Black Hand Side’ (an EP of instrumentals based on ‘Blaxploitation’ movies).

July, 2011 saw the coming of ‘the #BASEDRUSTY’, a campaign that featured Redenbacher writing a new song to the same instrumental almost daily for the entire month, as well as producing videos and creating web memes. All the tracks were collected for ‘the #BASEDRUSTY; ‘The Complete Caillou’, Another EP consisting of some outtakes from ‘The Tinkerer’ amongst other things called ‘The Minion’ was released in October.

Work began on ‘The Tinkerer’ in August, 2011, with the bulk of the tracks being produced in about a week. “I nailed down the identity of the album kinda quickly. I was producing quickly because it was coming to me quickly. This was the first time I tried to do anything completely by myself, so I started with what I knew and went from there. Thematically and conceptually, everything was coming to me crazy fast, man. I didn’t wanna miss anything. I wasn’t sure when I would have the time to lock in like this again, so I was insanely focused.”

Every rhythm bed for every track on the album except for ‘Dunwiddit’ and ‘Shake’ was created live on turntables. “Rocking the wheels live for the rhythm beds took it back to the foundation of hip-hop; everything started with the DJ. From there, I added on…and repeat and do it again…and repeat. That was my M.O. in terms of production. I did what I knew. I had made breakbeats by mixing records before; for ‘The Tinkerer’ I approached them as ‘tracks’.”

‘The Tinkerer’ is an album that is rooted in hip-hop, but reaches into other genres easily. From riff-oriented arena rock to bashment dub reggae. Smoked-out, filtered R&B and organ-fueled funk to trunk-rattling boom-bap based hip-hop…it’s all there.

The album jumps right off with a heavy groove on the title track and Redenbacher setting the scene over a cracking breakbeat and symphony of buzzing and whirring keyboards,

“It’s been so quiet and they wonder where Russ went…
Developing a science and I’m making adjustments…”

Lead single and video ‘Iron Man Monster Factory’ sees Redenbacher laying a heavy set of bars over the pounding thud and crack from a loop of a Nirvana song. ‘Shake’ could pass for something Prince wrote during his ‘1999’ era, with a reverb and distortion-heavy vocal and melody reminiscent of a punk-rock Phil Spector. ‘My Migraine’ and ‘It Comes And Goes’ are both blissed-out, woozy, filtered tunes that lean heavier towards R&B. “I feel like ‘The Tinkerer’ has a bit of everything, but nothing feels forced. I wanted to make a cohesive, dope album. I had a lifetime of music and influences to pick from for this one.”

…and of course, there are the BARS. The ‘Kid still raps.

‘Dunwiddit’ speaks to the frustrations of every artist whoever felt like the gig just ain’t worth it with Redenbacher stating his case over wheezing circus organ chords and a loping bassline influenced by the classic ‘Dangerous Music’ crew from Oakland. Redenbacher deftly pays homage to a legacy of soul artists past and present with ‘The Funk’. ‘Frah Ken Steen’ is a key point in the album, where Redenbacher uses an extended metaphor defending the ‘men’ he is making…as opposed to the ‘monsters’ everyone is seeing. (There’s also DIY web videos for these two tracks on Redenbacher’s Youtube Channel).

“I just wanted to make an album that I thought was interesting. I was free to do whatever I wanted and I did. I had a great time making ’The Tinkerer’ and I look forward to seeing how people react to it. It’s for science, man.”

Rusty Redenbacher’s ’The Tinkerer’ will be available January 31, 2012 from Daddy Real Entertainment.

/// I told you, I am going to keep on this until you all submit and get a copy.
This is the most fascinating treatise on artistic creation I have encountered in a long time.
Every aspect is probed.
It goes so deep, it becomes metaphysical.
He acknowledges the influences that made him.
He makes a beast that reflects them.
And the beast makes you a believer.
It’s a feat of prestidigitation that still has me marveling at how he pulled it off.
Even though he tells you what he’s doing and how he’s doing it every step of the way.
This is the kind of music that gets me excited.
Because there’s joy in the process.

I should have @MrWordsworth write my bio, man…
He heard an early version of ‘The Tinkerer’ cuz he’s trill and in my Circle Of Trust, which has expanded over the years.

Welp, when I made this track, I didn’t know what I was gonna do for it. What I do know is that my homey, Jhobon luuuuuuuuuuuv some Radiohead and so do I….and I miss huh.
The original version of this was the third thing I produced when I realized I was making an album called ‘The Tinkerer’. It was cool enough, but I could never get the mix where I wanted it. #ALSO, it was just too dark and murky, had a TON of bass, but no ‘sparkle’. I tried a lotta different stuff to get it to work, but I could never get a mix I liked outta the original version. I had to set the tune to the side for a while.
As I finished ‘The Tinkerer’, I realized that while I loved this record and the sentiment, sonically and thematically, it wasn’t fitting. But there was no way on God’s Green Earth I wasn’t gonna finish this song. I had to.
I came back to it this weekend. I took everything out of the original track except for the drums and maybe one little synth pad and rewrote some parts of the second verse to make the entire song more consistent. (I had some other #BARS that kinda foreshadowed the third verse, but not well enough. Really glad I fixed that.) Then, I went ahead and recut the entire vocal cuz there was no point in reshaping the entire track and leaving the old vocal on it, man.
This song will be included on a free EP, ‘The Minion’, which I plan to release alongside ‘The Tinkerer’ .
…and here it is.
For you and for my pal, Jhobon….and Thom and Jonny and Colin and Ed and Phil…#also #aswell. Those who know, know greatness.
